iNews interviewed us for our expert opinion on hot cross bun trends over Easter. We’re always delighted to work with press, and it’s a pleasure to be featured in a national newspaper in print and online.

With the arrivial of cheddar and caramelised onion chutney hot cross buns, chilli and masala , and even tomato and red Leicester versions from the big supermarkets, we explored how and why these wacky flavours come about.

“Hot cross bun innovation is a mutually beneficial process which is driven by both sides: consumers want to try something new and bring excitement into familiar categories, while supermarkets want to drive a profit and sell new products,” explains Lisa Harris, of food and drink consultancy Harris and Hayes.

“Of course there’s a lot of gimmicks and one-upmanship when it comes to big seasonal spending at Easter, but that’s part of the fun. These occasions are about celebration and bringing people together, and food plays an essential role in that.”
